April Insanity Results
 
Thirteen four-player teams competed in this year’s April Insanity tournament, held April 9-20, every day at lunchtime in Room 309.
 
The participating teams, in finishing order were:
1.     JEMZ of the Chessboard
2.     Maggie and the Boyz
3.     Amanda and the Pandas
4.     Three Queens and a Knight
5.     Team Robin
6.     Communism
7.     Bishop Takes Pawn
8.     Phreaxx
9-13. Runners with a Summer Tan
9-13. Bab Four
9-13. Star Trek Destroyer
9-13. Jack Attack
9-13. The Ones Who Just Might Win
 
Each member of the top eight teams was awarded a medal and there was an awards ceremony and party on the last day, which was April 21. Thank you to everyone who played in the tournament and helped to make it a big success!
 
Garfield Speed Chess Championship
 
The 2010 Garfield Speed Chess Championship will be held after school on Tuesday, May 18 in Room 309. A trophy will be awarded to the winner and the second through fifth place finishers will be awarded medals. Please sign up in Room 309 by 2:35 PM on Tuesday; we will start by 2:45 PM.

The 2010 Garfield Chess Championship will be held in June. Details will be forthcoming soon!

Dear Garfield:
 
Please extend your congratulations to the Garfield Chess Team who placed third at the State Chess Championship at Meadowdale High School last weekend!  Representing Garfield were Jr. Devon Manber, Sr. Zach Wener-Fligner, So. Kenneth Truong, Sr. Joseph Lachman, and Sr. Alan Corey-Derrah.
 
Garfield's second team placed seventh at State.  Members of this team were Jr. A.J. Ostrow, Fr. Jonathan Collins, Fr. Robin Tu, Sr. Conor Bronsdon, and Sr. Timmy Locke.  Conor was honored as a State All-Star and awarded a gold medal for his perfect 5-0 score.
 
Garfield's JV team won the State JV title.  Members of this team were Sr. Abe Bui, Sr. George Clark, Sr. Paul Croft, Sr. Alex Hamasaki, Jr. Tal Levy, Sr. Fred Ness, Sr. Andy Szeto, and Sr. MelanieTruong.
 
The tournament had 30 teams and 150 players in the main section and 79 players in the JV section.  This was the eleventh consecutive year that Garfield has finished among the top eight teams at State!  In this timespan, the chess team has won the title once (in 2008), placed second four times, and placed third twice.
